GERMAN COURSES - GENERAL INFORMATION

1. Which German course should I attend to make efficient progress?

In the intensive German course you learn German efficiently and fast. For example, If you want to achieve sufficient skills in all aspects of the German language to enter an Austrian university (Level B2 or C1), it will take you about 6-9 months, assuming you are an absolute beginner. If you already have some German knowledge, it will take you correspondingly shorter.

2. How many participants are in each German course?

On average 9 participants from various countries guarantee an international learning atmosphere and best possibilities for efficient work.

3. Where do the German course participants come from?

They come from many European countries such as Sweden, Spain, Italy, Poland, Hungary, France, Belgium, Croatia, Bosnia, and Greece. Also from Turkey, the Arab States, Japan or South Korea, the USA and Canada, Mexico or South America, and naturally, from Australia and the African countries.

4. How old are the participants of the German course?

Most course participants are between 18 and 35 years of age and need German for their studies or jobs. Some also have a German speaking partner in life, or they want to learn German just for fun. Participants older than 35 years also attend German courses at Alpha and have no trouble mixing with the younger students. If you are younger than 17, we would ask you to please contact us personally before your registration.
The minimum age for German course participants is 16.
Students under 18 booking accommodation with us need to bring a confirmation signed by their parents stating that they take all responsibility for the student during the whole time of his/her stay in Austria. Please bring this confirmation on your first day of your German course and hand it in at the reception desk.

5. How do I know which German course level I need?

You will be assigned a certain level according to the result of your German placement test. You can take this test either when registering personally at our school, or online.

6. How long is a German course?

You can attend a German course for 1 week up to a year.

7. How long will it take me to complete one German course level?

If you attend an intensive course it will take you approximately 150-200 units (6-8 weeks) to complete one level. Students who successfully complete certain levels early can skip half a level or one level after having consulted their German teacher.

9. How much do the German learning materials cost?

The German course books cost between € 15,- and € 30,- depending on the course level. The extra material which you receive from your German teacher is included in the German course fee.

10. What should I bring on the first day of the German course?

The course book, a notebook, a pen or pencil, and a good mood with a little curiosity about what will happen in the classroom. We want you to be an active participant and to enjoy learning German.

11. How many hours per week can I study German in class?

The intensive German course has 20 units (á 45 min.) plus 5 units Conversation, Interactive Computer lessons, Film-Workshop per week. In addition to this we offer our intensive plus individual program.

12. Can I study at the Institute after the German course finishes for the day?

Yes! Our Mediotheque and computer lab offer extensive German study and exercise material which you can use after your lessons.

13. How many hours per day will I be busy learning German?

In addition to the German lessons, you will also receive a homework assignment which will take about 1 hour to do. You may also need another half hour to learn vocabulary. A small weekly test will help you to see your progress in learning German. The more time you invest, the greater your success will be.

14. What do I really learn in my German course?

All our German courses have the main goal of ensuring that you can express yourself in German in all areas – whether speaking with people, reading and understanding texts or writing – as soon as possible.
This is what you will be learning, but grammar, naturally, is also an important part.

15. Can I change the German course level?

Yes, but only after having consulted your German teacher and having informed the staff at reception.

16. Where can I get additional German learning material like tapes, CDs, books?

You can buy or order German books, tapes, CDs, CD-Roms etc. in our shop.

17. Is there a program for my free time in Vienna?

We organize a variety of activities for your free time in Vienna each month. You may join us for tours through museums, afternoon video films, lectures, and visits to typical Austrian wine taverns. Many events are free, but for some things we must ask you to cover the expense.

GERMAN COURSE REGISTRATION, CANCELLATION, VISA

1. When and how should I register for the German course?

Please register as soon as possible, so we can reserve your place on a German course. We recommend registering 4 weeks before the beginning of the German course.

  1. Step: To register online, please fill in the German course registration form carefully. We cannot accept incomplete or faulty registrations. Please double-check your German course registration before sending it and remember to include the result of your placement test. You can also come to our school to register in person.
     
  2. Step: Deposit. To reserve your place on the German course, a deposit of 50% of the course fee has to be made. If your booking includes accommodation, the full amount in due at the time of registration. You can make the deposit in cash at our school or by bank transfer. You can find our price list on the page terms and fees.
     
  3. Step: Confirmation. As soon as your deposit reaches us, your place on the German course is reserved for you and you receive a confirmation via e-mail containing all the necessary information on the course and (if booked) accommodation.

2. How and when can I pay the fee for the German course?

Together with your German course registration we need your on-account payment of 50 % of the German course fee in order to process your booking. The full balance is due 2 weeks before the German course starts.
The FULL amount is due upon booking if:
- your booking is made less than 2 weeks before the German course starts
- you book accommodation
- you book a discount offer

3. Do I get a confirmation of the German course for my visa application?

Before you register for a German course please contact the Austian embassy in your home country to find out details about the visa application. After your payment we issue a confirmation of your registration which you present at the embassy.

GERMAN EXAMINATIONS, CERTIFICATES

1. Do I get a certificate for the German course?

You receive a certificate of attendance for each German course if you attend regularly and do not miss more than 20 % of the total units of tuition. After having completed a course level you can take an exam to receive a German certificate with a grade from Alpha Sprachinstitut Austria. If you want to receive an international German diploma you can sit for an exam of the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (ÖSD) at our institute.

2. What kind of German exams can I take at the school?

3. Do I have to pay for the German exams?

The internal German exams at the end of each German course level are included in the course fee. Fees apply for the exams of the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (ÖSD). Please note the registration deadlines for these German exams!

4. Which German certificate do I need to be allowed to enrol at an Austrian university?

Austrian universities require students to have either a B2 (Mittelstufe) or C1 (Oberstufe) Diploma, depending on the university and the field of study. Please make sure to find out which level is needed for enrolment at your university.

Yes, individual German training is possible at any time. It is a tailor-made German training for your specific needs.

4. Can I participate in the "German and Music" program also in summer?

The "German and Music" program is offered the whole year round - except July, August and September.

5. Are there any requirements for attending the "German and Music" program?

The program is designed for students who want to combine their German language training with music studies. It is possible to attend the program with elementary knowledge of German. The music lessons are offered for all instruments from very beginners to very advanced as well as vocal training.

6. Where does the music instruction take place?

Music instruction takes place at the Franz Schubert Konservatorium, a private conservatory licensed for state exams. The conservatory can be reached from Alpha Sprachinstitut Austria within 15 minutes by underground.

7. What kind of education do teachers at the conservatory have?

The teachers have a pedagogical degree and are very well qualified in their field.

8. Where can I practise my instrument privately?

Practice facilities (also with piano) are available at the conservatory at a small fee.

It is possible to rent an instrument at the conservatory during your stay.

ACCOMMODATION IN VIENNA

1. What kind of accommodation in Vienna can Alpha provide?

We organize accommodation in private homes and student hostels in Vienna, but only for students who are no older than 30 years. See accommodation.

2. I am older than 30 years. Where can I find an adequate accommodation?

As the accommodation offered by our German language school is specific to the needs of students it is not possible to organise accommodation for students of 30 years and older.
You can find reasonably priced accommodation on Odyssee - homesharing, at the Austrian National Union of Students, and www.apartment.at.

3. When can I move into my room and when do I have to move out?

Arrival day is always the day before the German course begins, departure day always the day after the German course ends. If you want to move in earlier or move out later you have to inform our office before your arrival and pay for the extra days.

4. Where exactly in Vienna is the school and how do I get there?

The German language school is situated in the heart of Vienna in the first district. You can get there easily by public transport, taking either the underground lines U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz or the trams 2 or D to Schwarzenbergplatz).

To get to the school from the airport, take the shuttle bus to Schwedenplatz (runs every 20 minutes) or the City Airport Train (CAT) to Landstraße. Change to underground U4 (direction "Hütteldorf") and get off at "Karlsplatz". From there it is only 2 minutes to walk.

5. How much are the tickets for public transport in Vienna?

A ticket for a week is € 14.-, a ticket for 1 month is € 49.50, a one-way ticket is € 1.80

6. How much money will I be spending approximately per week?

You will be spending approx. € 150.- per week on food, tickets for public transport, admission fees etc. If you go out a lot, for example to the movies or the theatre, you will of course be spending more. A movie ticket is about € 7.30, a ticket for the theatre € 15, and a ticket for the Vienna Opera costs from € 36, standing-room tickets cost from € 3.63.

7. Where can I get cheap meals in Vienna?

Just around the corner of the school you will find two self-service restaurants, a couple of student restaurants and many restaurants which offer good value lunch menus. For detailed information please ask at the reception or see the notice board in the school hall.
