EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE

One of the aims of the "Common European Framework of Reference: Learning, Teaching, Assessment", Council of Europe reference document for the European Language Portfolio, is to help partners to describe the levels of proficiency required by existing standards, tests and examinations in order to facilitate comparisons between different systems of qualifications. For this purpose the Council of Europe has developed a European Framework with common reference levels.

Global Scale: A1 - A2 - B1 - B2 - C1 - C2

Level A1

Basic User A1 - Breakthrough

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Requirements: command of the Latin alphabet

Course contents:
- simple everyday-life communication, personal topics
- Basic Grammar:
   verb (present, perfect, past tense and imperative),
   simple use of modal verbs,
   nouns (nominative, accusative, and dative case, plural),
   prepositions, statements of place and date, interrogative sentences,
   adjectives (comparison, declension),
   personal pronouns, possessive pronouns etc.
   subordinate clauses with "dass, weil, obwohl, wenn"
- topics: introducing yourself, food, clothes, living (house), travel, leisure    time etc.
- understanding of simple texts and of important information
- writing of simple written texts (taking notes, short personal letters)
- learning of the correct German pronunciation

Level A2

Basic User A2 - Waystage

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Requirements: basic command of German

Course contents:
- preparation for the ÖSD - Grundstufe Deutsch
- conversation about everyday-life, personal topics
- repetition and consolidation of grammar:
   verbs (present, perfect and past tense)
   nouns (dative and accusative case)
   adjectives (declension, comparison)
   statements of place and time
   subordinate clauses (dass, weil, obwohl, wenn)
- field of topics: family, health, living (house), job, travel etc.
- understanding of simple texts
- writing of simple letters
- improvement of pronunciation
- acquisition of learning techniques

Level B1

Independent User B1 - Threshold

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes &ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Requirements: some command of German or

Course contents:
- preparation for the Zertifikat Deutsch
- conversations about more complex topics relating to the personal
- extension of basic grammar:
   verbs: infinitive with "zu", subjunctive II, passive, Zustandspassiv,    participles
   nouns: n-declension, pronominal adverbs
   adjectives: (comparison, declension)
   statements of locality, temporality and modality
   subordinate clauses (temporal, "damit, um ..zu, statt dass, dadurch
   dass," etc.)
   sentence structure, textual grammatical structures etc.
   word formation
- topics: media, jobs, conflicts and their solution, ways of living,
   memories etc.
- understanding of more complex and authentic texts
- writing of simple personal and official letters
- improvement of pronunciation
- acquisition of learning techniques

Level B2

Independent User B2 - Vantage

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Requirements: good basic command of German

Course contents:
- discussions and conversations on more complex questions
- extension of grammar knowledge: subjunctive I and II, subordinate
   clauses, passive, reported speech, Konnektoren, textual grammatical
   structures
- topics: job, family, travel, film, sports and fashion etc
- differentiating understanding of text excerpts from the press, literature
   and popular science
- improvement of pronunciation
- acquisition of learning techniques
- writing of complex texts: statements, letters to the editor etc.

Level C1

Proficient User C1 - Effective Operational Proficiency

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Requirements: very good command of German

Course contents:
- preparation for the
ÖSD - Mittelstufe Deutsch exam
- discussions and conversations of complex topics and questions
- consolidation of grammatical knowledge: subjunctive II, passive and
   passive paraphrasing
- verbalisation, nominalisation, attribution, indirect speech,
- subjective and objective use of modal verbs, textual grammar
- topics: Languages, Communication, Science, Future, Society, Literature,
   Art
- differentiated understanding of texts from the press, literature and
   sciences
- writing of complex written texts (statements, opinions, letters to the
   editor)
- improvement of pronunciation
- acquisition of learning techniques

Level C2

Proficient User C2 - Mastery

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

Requirements: very good command of German

Course contents:
- preparation for the German exams Diplom Wirtschaftssprache Deutsch and the Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom
- discussions and conversations of complex topics
- differentiated contemplation of ways of expressing oneself in German
- contemplation of grammar in regard to questions of style
- topics: stress on areas in literature, economy, science
- differentiated understanding of text excerpts from the press, literature
   and sciences
- writing of complex texts: detailed statements, analysis, correspondence
- improvement of pronunciation
- acquisition of learning techniques
