Learn German in Vienna
VIENNA CULTURE AND ACTIVITIES
Culture
Hardly any other city can offer such an interesting and so wide a variety of cultural
events. Vienna's music scene is world-known. Think about the Vienna Philharmonic, the
Vienna Choir Boys, the Vienna State Opera. In Vienna there is a living concert scene that offers
classic as well as modern music on the highest level. Experimental theatre is also
presented here along with performances of classic theatre. Many are also interested in
ballet or in modern dance. The museum collections naturally have world value as, for
example, the graphic collection in the Albertina. Vienna is a city that takes care of its
traditions, and allows the modern to gain an even larger status.

Alpha Sprachinstitut Austria organises programs for your free time in Vienna,
because we think that it is very important for you to also learn something about Vienna,
about Austria, and also about the Austrian and German cultures. These extracurricular
activities give you a chance to practise your German and to make friends.
Some examples of our leisure time program:
Lectures about Vienna
With the support of Video-Film Vienna, we offer each month information about the city's
history, the interesting points for sightseeing, and about what life is like in Vienna.
City Walks
Apart from the normal tourist sites, you will see a special side of Vienna. We will take
you through the small, old streets of the inner city, show you some hidden treasures, and
tell you stories and tales that you will not find in any travel book. Walk with us down
the Ringstrasse, looking for traces of Mozart and Beethoven, or discover with us the rest
of the ruins of the Roman settlement, Vindobona.
Tours through museums and other
famous buildings
We organize tours for you through Vienna's interesting museums - the Art
History Museum, the Jewish Museum, the History Museum of the City of Vienna - and through
the Vienna State Opera, and the Parliament.
Literature Club
Many students enjoy the German literature evenings each Wednesday in the middle of
the month.
Students attending the intermediate or advanced German courses as well as former students of our
school discuss and analyse various works in German literature. In the choice of topics we
take into consideration the reading list for the Kleines
Deutsches Sprachdiplom, therefore the seminar also appeals to people who intend to
take the KDS exam.
Alpha's Cross Culture Evenings
A popular meeting place of students and former students. In a relaxed atmosphere you
practise the German language, meet new friends and get in contact with various cultures
and nationalities.
Where? Friday's at Schwarzenbergplatz
When ? Wednesday always after the literature seminar approx. 7 p.m.
Heuriger Evenings
A Heuriger is a typical Austrian wine tavern which serves its own home-made wine. Many of
them are on the outskirts of the city. There, you can talk with friends and sit with a
glass of wine in a relaxed atmosphere. You will be surrounded by what
"Gemütlichkeit" means - Austrian geniality, or good nature. Come with us to a
Heuriger, and take the time to get to know your German course colleagues better!
Viennese waltz Evening
What is more typical for Vienna than a Viennese waltz? We invite you to spin around in
time. Several times a year, we arrange a dance evening for you where even the less
enthusiastic dancers will see how much fun it is to move to the melodies of Johann
Strauss. And, of course, those who really work up a sweat on the dancefloor will have the
chance to have something to drink.
Excursions near Vienna
Also, the surroundings of Vienna have a lot to offer. Join us for a trip to the Wachau, to
the Melk monastery, to Neusiedler Lake, or to Klosterneuburg where Emperor Karl VI built
an especially magnificent monastery.
Video Film Afternoons
In our Institute we show you films on Austrian and German literature, works by Austrian
and German directors, and also famous entertainment films like "Sissi" with Romy
Schneider in the leading role.
Many of these programs are free, but some are offered at cost price.
